بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
وَالنَّجْمِBy the starإِذَاwhenهَوَىٰit goes down
By the star when it descends
مَاNotضَلَّhas strayedصَاحِبُكُمْyour companionوَمَاand notغَوَىhas he erred
Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred
وَمَاAnd notيَنطِقُhe speaksعَنِfromالْهَوَىٰٓthe desire
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination
إِنْNotهُوَitإِلَّا(is) exceptوَحْىٌa revelationيُوحَىٰrevealed
It is not but a revelation revealed
عَلَّمَهُۥHas taught himشَدِيدُthe (one) mightyالْقُوَىٰ(in) power
Taught to him by one intense in strength
ذُوPossessor ofمِرَّةٍsoundnessفَاسْتَوَىٰAnd he rose
One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
وَهُوَWhile heبِالْأُفُقِ(was) in the horizonالْأَعْلَىٰthe highest
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon
ثُمَّThenدَنَاhe approachedفَتَدَلَّىٰand came down
Then he approached and descended
فَكَانَAnd wasقَابَ(at) a distanceقَوْسَيْنِ(of) two bow-(lengths)أَوْorأَدْنَىٰnearer
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer
فَأَوْحَىٰٓSo he revealedإِلَىٰtoعَبْدِهِۦHis slaveمَآwhatأَوْحَىٰhe revealed
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed
مَاNotكَذَبَliedالْفُؤَادُthe heartمَاwhatرَأَىٰٓit saw
The heart did not lie [about] what it saw
أَفَتُمَارُونَهُۥThen will you dispute with him?عَلَىٰaboutمَاwhatيَرَىٰhe saw
So will you dispute with him over what he saw
وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyرَاٰهُhe saw himنَزْلَةً(in) descentأُخْرَىٰanother
And he certainly saw him in another descent
عِندَNearسِدْرَةِ(the) Lote Treeالْمُنْتَهَىٰ(of) the utmost boundary
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary
عِندَهَاNear itجَنَّةُ(is the) Gardenالْمَأْوَىٰٓ(of) Abode
Near it is the Garden of Refuge
إِذْWhenيَغْشَىcoveredالسِّدْرَةَthe Lote Treeمَاwhatيَغْشَىٰcovers
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]
مَاNotزَاغَswervedالْبَصَرُthe sightوَمَاand notطَغَىٰit transgressed
The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]
لَقَدْCertainlyرَأَىhe sawمِنْofاٰيَاتِ(the) Signsرَبِّهِ(of) his Lordالْكُبْرَىٰٓthe Greatest
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُSo have you seen?اللَّاتَthe Latوَالْعُزَّىand the Uzza
So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza
وَمَنَوٰةَAnd Manatالثَّالِثَةَthe thirdالْأُخْرَىٰٓthe other
And Manat, the third - the other one
أَلَكُمُIs for you?الذَّكَرُthe maleوَلَهُand for Himالْأُنثَىٰthe female
Is the male for you and for Him the female
تِلْكَThisإِذًاthenقِسْمَةٌ(is) a divisionضِيزَىٰٓunfair
That, then, is an unjust division
إِنْNotهِىَtheyإِلَّآ(are) exceptأَسْمَآءٌnamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَآyou have named themأَنتُمْyouوَآبَاؤُكُمand your forefathersمَّآnotأَنزَلَhas sent downاللهُAllahبِهَاfor itمِنanyسُلْطَانٍauthorityإِنNotيَتَّبِعُونَthey followإِلَّاexceptالظَّنَّassumptionوَمَاand whatتَهْوَىdesireالْأَنفُسُthe(ir) soulsوَلَقَدْAnd certainlyجَآءَهُمhas come to themمِّنfromرَّبِّهِمُtheir Lordالْهُدَىٰٓthe guidance
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance
أَمْOrلِلْإِنسَانِ(is) for manمَاwhatتَمَنَّىhe wishes
Or is there for man whatever he wishes
فَلِلّٰهِBut for Allahالْاٰخِرَةُ(is) the lastوَالْأُولَىٰand the first
Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]
وَكَمAnd how many?مِّنofمَّلَكٍ(the) Angelsفِىinالسَّمَاوَاتِthe heavensلَاnotتُغْنِىwill availشَفَاعَتُهُمْtheir intercessionشَيْئًاanythingإِلَّاexceptمِنfromبَعْدِafterأَن[that]يَأْذَنَhas given permissionاللهُAllahلِمَنfor whomيَشَآءُHe willsوَيَرْضَىٰٓand approves
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves
إِنَّIndeedالَّذِينَthose whoلَا(do) notيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveبِالْاَٰخِرَةِin the Hereafterلَيُسَمُّونَsurely they nameالْمَلَآئِكَةَthe Angelsتَسْمِيَةَname(s)الْأُنثَىٰ(of) female
Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names
وَمَاAnd notلَهُمfor themبِهِۦabout itمِنْanyعِلْمٍknowledgeإِنNotيَتَّبِعُونَthey followإِلَّاbutالظَّنَّassumptionوَإِنَّAnd indeedالظَّنَّthe assumptionلَا(does) notيُغْنِىavailمِنَagainstالْحَقِّthe truthشَيْئًاanything
And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all
فَأَعْرِضْSo turn awayعَنfromمَّن(him) whoتَوَلَّىٰturns awayعَنfromذِكْرِنَاOur Reminderوَلَمْand notيُرِدْhe desiresإِلَّاexceptالْحَيَاةَthe lifeالدُّنْيَا(of) the world
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life
ذَٰلِكَThatمَبْلَغُهُم(is) their sumمِّنَofالْعِلْمِknowledgeإِنَّIndeedرَبَّكَyour Lordهُوَ(is) He (Who)أَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَن(he) whoضَلَّstraysعَنfromسَبِيلِهِۦHis Pathوَهُوَand Heأَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَنِ(he) whoاهْتَدَىٰis guided
That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided
وَلِلّٰهِAnd for Allahمَا(is) whateverفِى(is) inالسَّمَاوَاتِthe heavensوَمَاand whateverفِى(is) inالْأَرْضِthe earthلِيَجْزِىَthat He may recompenseالَّذِينَthose whoأَسَاؤُواdo evilبِمَاwith whatعَمِلُواthey have doneوَيَجْزِىَand recompenseالَّذِينَthose whoأَحْسَنُواdo goodبِالْحُسْنَىwith the best
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward]
الَّذِينَThose whoيَجْتَنِبُونَavoidكَبَائِرَgreatالْإِثْمِsinsوَالْفَوَاحِشَand the immoralitiesإِلَّاexceptاللَّمَمَthe small faultsإِنَّindeedرَبَّكَyour Lordوَاسِعُ(is) vastالْمَغْفِرَةِ(in) forgivenessهُوَHeأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِكُمْabout youإِذْwhenأَنشَأَكُمHe produced youمِّنَfromالْأَرْضِthe earthوَإِذْand whenأَنتُمْyou (were)أَجِنَّةٌfetusesفِىinبُطُونِ(the) wombsأُمَّهَاتِكُمْ(of) your mothersفَلَاSo (do) notتُزَكُّوٓاascribe purityأَنفُسَكُمْ(to) yourselvesهُوَHeأَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَنِ(he) whoاتَّقَىٰٓfears
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him
أَفَرَأَيْتَDid you see?الَّذِىthe one whoتَوَلَّىٰturned away
Have you seen the one who turned away
وَأَعْطَىٰAnd gaveقَلِيلًاa littleوَأَكْدَىٰٓand withheld
And gave a little and [then] refrained
أَعِندَهُۥIs with him?عِلْمُ(the) knowledgeالْغَيْبِ(of) the unseenفَهُوَso heيَرَىٰٓsees
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees
أَمْOrلَمْnotيُنَبَّأْhe was informedبِمَاwith whatفِى(was) inصُحُفِ(the) Scripturesمُوسَىٰ(of) Musa
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
وَإِبْرَاهِيمَAnd Ibrahimالَّذِىwhoوَفَّىٰٓfulfilled
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations]
أَلَّاThat notتَزِرُwill bearوَازِرَةٌa bearer of burdensوِزْرَ(the) burdenأُخْرَىٰ(of) another
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
وَأَنAnd thatلَّيْسَis notلِلْإِنسَانِfor manإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatسَعَىٰhe strives (for)
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
وَأَنَّAnd thatسَعْيَهُۥhis strivingسَوْفَwill soonيُرَىٰbe seen
And that his effort is going to be seen
ثُمَّThenيُجْزَاهُhe will be recompensed for itالْجَزَآءَthe recompenseالْأَوْفَىٰthe fullest
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense
وَأَنَّAnd thatإِلَىٰtoرَبِّكَyour Lordالْمُنْتَهَىٰ(is) the final goal
And that to your Lord is the finality
وَأَنَّهُۥAnd that Heهُوَ[He]أَضْحَكَmakes (one) laughوَأَبْكَىٰand makes (one) weep
And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
وَأَنَّهُۥAnd that Heهُوَ[He]أَمَاتَcauses deathوَأَحْيَاand gives life
And that it is He who causes death and gives life
وَأَنَّهُۥAnd that Heخَلَقَcreatedالزَّوْجَيْنِthe pairsالذَّكَرَthe maleوَالْأُنثَىٰand the female
And that He creates the two mates - the male and female
مِنFromنُّطْفَةٍa semen-dropإِذَاwhenتُمْنَىٰit is emitted
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
وَأَنَّAnd thatعَلَيْهِupon Himالنَّشْأَةَ(is) the bringing forthالْأُخْرَىٰanother
And that [incumbent] upon Him is the next creation
وَأَنَّهُۥAnd that Heهُوَ[He]أَغْنَىٰenrichesوَأَقْنَىٰand suffices
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
وَأَنَّهُۥAnd that Heهُوَ[He]رَبُّ(is the) Lordالشِّعْرَىٰ(of) Sirius
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
وَأَنَّهُۥٓAnd that HeأَهْلَكَdestroyedعَادًاAadالْأُولَىٰthe first
And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad
وَثَمُودَاAnd Thamudفَمَآso notأَبْقَىٰHe spared
And Thamud - and He did not spare [them]
وَقَوْمَAnd (the) peopleنُوحٍ(of) NuhمِّنfromقَبْلُbeforeإِنَّهُمْIndeed theyكَانُواwereهُمْtheyأَظْلَمَmore unjustوَأَطْغَىٰand more rebellious
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing
وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَAnd the overturned citiesأَهْوَىٰHe overthrew
And the overturned towns He hurled down
فَغَشَّاهَاSo covered themمَاwhatغَشَّىٰcovered
And covered them by that which He covered
فَبِأَىِّThen which (of)اٰلَآءِthe Favorsرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordتَتَمَارَىwill you doubt
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt
هَٰذَاThisنَذِيرٌ(is) a warnerمِّنَfromالنُّذُرِthe warnersالْأُولَىٰٓthe former
This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners
أَزِفَتِHas approachedالْاٰزِفَةُthe Approaching Day
The Approaching Day has approached
لَيْسَNot isلَهَاfor itمِنfromدُونِbesidesاللهِAllahكَاشِفَةٌany remover
Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover
أَفَمِنْThen of?هَٰذَاthisالْحَدِيثِstatementتَعْجَبُونَyou wonder
Then at this statement do you wonder
وَتَضْحَكُونَAnd you laughوَلَاand (do) notتَبْكُونَweep
And you laugh and do not weep
وَأَنتُمْWhile youسَامِدُونَamuse (yourselves)
While you are proudly sporting
فَاسْجُدُواSo prostrateلِلّٰهِto Allahوَاعْبُدُواْand worship (Him)
So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]
