About this project

Qur'an Core Vocabulary — a free tool for learning the Arabic words that make up most of the Qur'an.

What this is

This site teaches the core vocabulary of the Qur'an through flashcards, quizzes, and a guided Duolingo-style course. The word list is built from a frequency analysis of the Qur'anic text: a relatively small set of words — mostly pronouns, prepositions, particles, and the most common nouns and verbs — accounts for the large majority of the words that actually appear in the Qur'an. Learning that core set first is a well-known, efficient way to start reading Qur'anic Arabic with real comprehension.

Every word is shown with real example verses drawn from the Qur'an, word-by-word, alongside the Saheeh International translation, so meanings are grounded in actual usage rather than an isolated word list.

What this isn't

This is a vocabulary and language-learning aid, not a work of Islamic scholarship, a certified translation, or a substitute for study with a qualified teacher. Word meanings are drawn from established Qur'anic word-by-word and translation sources and checked for accuracy where possible, but Arabic words — especially in the Qur'an — often carry a depth and range of meaning that a short flashcard gloss cannot fully capture. For matters of interpretation, jurisprudence, or ruling, please consult a qualified scholar.

Who built it

This project is built and maintained independently by a single developer, not affiliated with any publisher, mosque, or Islamic organization. It's a free, non-commercial project — there are no ads and nothing is sold. It's shared in the hope that it's useful to others learning to read the Qur'an.

Sources

Word-by-word Arabic/English data is drawn from the word-by-word Qur'an dataset published by QuranExcel.com, which in turn draws its verse-level English translations from the Saheeh International translation (Umm Muhammad et al., Abul-Qasim Publishing House) as published on Quran.com. Word frequency data is derived from a statistical analysis of the Qur'anic text. See the Terms of Use for more on how this content may be used, and please let us know if we've mischaracterized a source anywhere here.
