Surah 90
البلدAl-Balad
The City · 20 verses · 82 words
بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
لَآNay!أُقْسِمُI swearبِهَٰذَاby thisالْبَلَدِcity
I swear by this city, Makkah
وَأَنتَAnd youحِلٌّ(are) free (to dwell)بِهَٰذَاin thisالْبَلَدِcity
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city
وَوَالِدٍAnd the begetterوَمَاand whatوَلَدَhe begot
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him]
لَقَدْCertainlyخَلَقْنَاWe have createdالْإِنسَانَmanفِى(to be) inكَبَدٍhardship
We have certainly created man into hardship
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he think?أَنthatلَّنnotيَقْدِرَhas powerعَلَيْهِover himأَحَدٌanyone
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him
يَقُولُHe will sayأَهْلَكْتُI have squanderedمَالًاwealthلُّبَدًاabundant
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he think?أَنthatلَّمْnotيَرَهُۥٓsees himأَحَدٌanyone
Does he think that no one has seen him
أَلَمْHave not?نَجْعَلWe madeلَّهُۥfor himعَيْنَيْنِtwo eyes
Have We not made for him two eyes
وَلِسَانًاAnd a tongueوَشَفَتَيْنِand two lips
And a tongue and two lips
وَهَدَيْنَاهُAnd we shown himالنَّجْدَيْنِthe two ways
And have shown him the two ways
فَلَاBut notاقْتَحَمَhe has attemptedالْعَقَبَةَthe steep path
But he has not broken through the difficult pass
وَمَآAnd what?أَدْرَاكَcan make you knowمَاwhat?الْعَقَبَةُthe steep path (is)
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass
فَكُّ(It is) freeingرَقَبَةٍa neck
It is the freeing of a slave
أَوْOrإِطْعَامٌfeedingفِىinيَوْمٍa dayذِىofمَسْغَبَةٍsevere hunger
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
يَتِيمًاAn orphanذَاofمَقْرَبَةٍnear relationship
An orphan of near relationship
أَوْOrمِسْكِينًاa needy personذَاinمَتْرَبَةٍmisery
Or a needy person in misery
ثُمَّThenكَانَhe isمِنَofالَّذِينَthose whoاٰمَنُواْbelieveوَتَوَاصَوْاand enjoin (each other)بِالصَّبْرِto patienceوَتَوَاصَوْاand enjoin (each other)بِالْمَرْحَمَةِto compassion
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَThoseأَصْحَابُ(are the) companionsالْمَيْمَنَةِ(of) the right (hand)
Those are the companions of the right
وَالَّذِينَBut those whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveبِاٰيَاتِنَاin Our Versesهُمْtheyأَصْحَابُ(are the) companionsالْمَشْأَمَةِ(of) the left (hand)
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left
عَلَيْهِمْOver themنَارٌ(will be the) Fireمُّؤْصَدَةٌclosed in
Over them will be fire closed in
