Surah 74
المدثرAl-Muddaththir
The Cloaked One · 56 verses · 255 words
بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
يَاأَيُّهَاO youالْمُدَّثِّرُwho covers himself!
O you who covers himself [with a garment]
قُمْStand upفَأَنذِرْand warn
Arise and warn
وَرَبَّكَAnd your Lordفَكَبِّرْmagnify
And your Lord glorify
وَثِيَابَكَAnd your clothingفَطَهِّرْpurify
And your clothing purify
وَالرُّجْزَAnd uncleanlinessفَاهْجُرْavoid
And uncleanliness avoid
وَلَاAnd (do) notتَمْنُنconfer favorتَسْتَكْثِرُ(to) acquire more
And do not confer favor to acquire more
وَلِرَبِّكَAnd for your Lordفَاصْبِرْbe patient
But for your Lord be patient
فَإِذَاThen whenنُقِرَis blownفِىinالنَّاقُورِthe trumpet
And when the trumpet is blown
فَذَٰلِكَThatيَوْمَئِذٍDayيَوْمٌ(will be) a Dayعَسِيرٌdifficult
That Day will be a difficult day
عَلَىForالْكَافِرِينَthe disbelieversغَيْرُnotيَسِيرٍeasy
For the disbelievers - not easy
ذَرْنِىLeave Meوَمَنْand whomخَلَقْتُI createdوَحِيدًاalone
Leave Me with the one I created alone
وَجَعَلْتُAnd I grantedلَهُۥto himمَالًاwealthمَّمْدُودًاextensive
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
وَبَنِينَAnd childrenشُهُودًاpresent
And children present [with him]
وَمَهَّدتُّAnd I spreadلَهُۥfor himتَمْهِيدًاease
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]
ثُمَّThenيَطْمَعُhe desiresأَنْthatأَزِيدَI (should) add more
Then he desires that I should add more
كَلَّآBy no means!إِنَّهُۥIndeed heكَانَhas beenلِآيَاتِنَاto Our Versesعَنِيدًاstubborn
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥSoon I will cover Himصَعُودًا(with) a laborious punishment
I will cover him with arduous torment
إِنَّهُۥIndeed heفَكَّرَthoughtوَقَدَّرَand plotted
Indeed, he thought and deliberated
فَقُتِلَSo may he be destroyedكَيْفَhow?قَدَّرَhe plotted!
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated
ثُمَّThenقُتِلَmay he be destroyedكَيْفَhow?قَدَّرَhe plotted!
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated
ثُمَّThenنَظَرَhe looked
Then he considered [again]
ثُمَّThenعَبَسَhe frownedوَبَسَرَand scowled
Then he frowned and scowled
ثُمَّThenأَدْبَرَhe turned backوَاسْتَكْبَرَand was proud
Then he turned back and was arrogant
فَقَالَThen he saidإِنْNotهَٰذَآ(is) thisإِلَّاbutسِحْرٌmagicيُؤْثَرُimitated
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]
إِنْNotهَٰذَآ(is) thisإِلَّاbutقَوْلُ(the) wordالْبَشَرِ(of) a human being
This is not but the word of a human being
سَأُصْلِيهِSoon I will drive himسَقَرَ(into) Hell
I will drive him into Saqar
وَمَآAnd what?أَدْرَاكَcan make you knowمَاwhat?سَقَرُ(is) Hell
And what can make you know what is Saqar
لَاNotتُبْقِىit lets remainوَلَاand notتَذَرُit leaves
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned]
لَوَّاحَةٌScorchingلِّلْبَشَرِthe human (skin)
Blackening the skins
عَلَيْهَاOver itتِسْعَةَ(are) nineعَشَرَ-teen
Over it are nineteen [angels]
وَمَاAnd notجَعَلْنَآWe have madeأَصْحَابَkeepersالنَّارِ(of) the FireإِلَّاexceptمَلَآئِكَةٌAngelsوَمَاAnd notجَعَلْنَاWe have madeعِدَّتَهُمْtheir numberإِلَّاexceptفِتْنَةً(as) a trialلِّلَّذِينَfor those whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveلِيَسْتَيْقِنَthat may be certainالَّذِينَthose whoأُوتُواْwere givenالْكِتَابَthe Scriptureوَيَزْدَادَand may increaseالَّذِينَthose whoاٰمَنُواْbelieveإِيمَانًا(in) faithوَلَاand notيَرْتَابَmay doubtالَّذِينَthose whoأُوتُواْwere givenالْكِتَابَthe Scriptureوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَand the believersوَلِيَقُولَand that may sayالَّذِينَthoseفِىinقُلُوبِهِمtheir heartsمَّرَضٌ(is) a diseaseوَالْكَافِرُونَand the disbelieversمَاذَآWhat?أَرَادَ(does) intendاللهُAllahبِهَٰذَاby thisمَثَلًاexampleكَذَٰلِكَThusيُضِلُّdoes let go astrayاللهُAllahمَنwhomيَشَآءُHe willsوَيَهْدِىand guidesمَنwhomيَشَآءُHe willsوَمَاAnd noneيَعْلَمُknowsجُنُودَ(the) hostsرَبِّكَ(of) your LordإِلَّاexceptهُوَHimوَمَاAnd notهِىَitإِلَّا(is) butذِكْرَىٰa reminderلِلْبَشَرِto (the) human beings
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity
كَلَّاNay!وَالْقَمَرِBy the moon
No! By the moon
وَالَّيْلِAnd the nightإِذْwhenأَدْبَرَit departs
And [by] the night when it departs
وَالصُّبْحِAnd the morningإِذَاwhenأَسْفَرَit brightens
And [by] the morning when it brightens
إِنَّهَاIndeed itلَإِحْدَى(is) surely oneالْكُبَرِ(of) the greatest
Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]
نَذِيرًاA warningلِّلْبَشَرِto (the) human being
As a warning to humanity
لِمَنTo whoeverشَآءَwillsمِنكُمْamong youأَنtoيَتَقَدَّمَproceedأَوْorيَتَأَخَّرَstay behind
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind
كُلُّEveryنَفْسٍsoulبِمَاfor whatكَسَبَتْit has earnedرَهِينَةٌ(is) pledged
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
إِلَّآExceptأَصْحَابَ(the) companionsالْيَمِينِ(of) the right
Except the companions of the right
فِىInجَنَّاتٍGardensيَتَسَآءَلُونَasking each other
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
عَنِAboutالْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminals
About the criminals
مَاWhat?سَلَكَكُمْled youفِىintoسَقَرَHell
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar
قَالُواْThey will sayلَمْNotنَكُwe wereمِنَofالْمُصَلِّينَthose who prayed
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed
وَلَمْAnd notنَكُwe used toنُطْعِمُWe feedالْمِسْكِينَthe poor
Nor did we used to feed the poor
وَكُنَّاAnd we used toنَخُوضُwe indulge in vain talkمَعَwithالْخَائِضِينَthe vain talkers
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it]
وَكُنَّاAnd we used toنُكَذِّبُwe denyبِيَوْمِ(the) Dayالدِّينِ(of) the Judgment
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
حَتَّىٰٓUntilأَتَانَاcame to usالْيَقِينُthe certainty
Until there came to us the certainty
فَمَاThen notتَنفَعُهُمْwill benefit themشَفَاعَةُintercessionالشَّافِعِينَ(of) the intercessors
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors
فَمَاThen what?لَهُمْ(is) for themعَنِ(that) fromالتَّذْكِرَةِthe Reminderمُعْرِضِينَthey (are) turning away
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
كَأَنَّهُمْAs if they (were)حُمُرٌdonkeysمُّسْتَنفِرَةٌfrightened
As if they were alarmed donkeys
فَرَّتْFleeingمِنfromقَسْوَرَةٍa lion
Fleeing from a lion
بَلْNay!يُرِيدُDesiresكُلُّeveryامْرِئٍpersonمِّنْهُمْof themأَنthatيُؤْتَىٰhe may be givenصُحُفًاpagesمُّنَشَّرَةًspread out
Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about
كَلَّاNay!بَلButلَّاnotيَخَافُونَthey fearالْاٰخِرَةَthe Hereafter
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter
كَلَّآNay!إِنَّهُۥIndeed itتَذْكِرَةٌ(is) a Reminder
No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder
فَمَنSo whoeverشَآءَwillsذَكَرَهُۥ(may) pay heed to it
Then whoever wills will remember it
وَمَاAnd notيَذْكُرُونَwill pay heedإِلَّآexceptأَنthatيَشَآءَwillsاللهُAllahهُوَHeأَهْلُ(is) worthyالتَّقْوَىٰto be fearedوَأَهْلُand worthyالْمَغْفِرَةِto forgive
And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness
