Surah 70
المعارجAl-Ma'arij

بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
سَأَلَAskedسَائِلٌa questionerبِعَذَابٍabout a punishmentوَاقِعٍbound to happen
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen
لِّلْكَافِرينَTo the disbelieversلَيْسَnotلَهُۥof itدَافِعٌany preventer
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer
مِّنَFromاللهِAllahذِىOwnerالْمَعَارِجِ(of) the ways of ascent
[It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent
تَعْرُجُAscendالْمَلَآئِكَةُthe Angelsوَالرُّوحُand the Spiritإِلَيْهِto Himفِىinيَوْمٍa Dayكَانَ[is]مِقْدَارُهُۥits measureخَمْسِينَ(is) fiftyأَلْفَthousandسَنَةٍyear(s)
The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years
فَاصْبِرْSo be patientصَبْرًاa patienceجَمِيلًاgood
So be patient with gracious patience
إِنَّهُمْIndeed theyيَرَوْنَهُۥsee itبَعِيدًا(as) far off
Indeed, they see it [as] distant
وَنَرَاهُBut We see itقَرِيبًاnear
But We see it [as] near
يَوْمَ(The) Dayتَكُونُwill beالسَّمَآءُthe skyكَالْمُهْلِlike molten copper
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil
وَتَكُونُAnd will beالْجِبَالُthe mountainsكَالْعِهْنِlike wool
And the mountains will be like wool
وَلَاAnd notيَسْـَٔلُwill askحَمِيمٌa friendحَمِيمًا(about) a friend
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْThey will be made to see each otherيَوَدُّWould wishالْمُجْرِمُthe criminalلَوْifيَفْتَدِىhe (could be) ransomedمِنْfromعَذَابِ(the) punishmentيَوْمِئِذٍ(of) that Dayبِبَنِيهِby his children
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
وَصَاحِبَتِهِۦAnd his spouseوَأَخِيهِand his brother
And his wife and his brother
وَفَصِيلَتِهِAnd his nearest kindredالَّتِىwhoتُؤْويهِsheltered him
And his nearest kindred who shelter him
وَمَنAnd whoeverفِى(is) onالْأَرْضِthe earthجَمِيعًاallثُمَّthenيُنجِيهِit (could) save him
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him
كَلَّآBy no means!إِنَّهَاIndeed it (is)لَظَىٰsurely a Flame of Hell
No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell]
نَزَّاعَةًA removerلِّلشَّوَىof the skin of the head
A remover of exteriors
تَدْعُوInvitingمَنْ(him) whoأَدْبَرَturned his backوَتَوَلَّىٰand went away
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
وَجَمَعَAnd collectedفَأَوْعَىٰٓand hoarded
And collected [wealth] and hoarded
إِنَّIndeedالْإِنسَانَthe manخُلِقَwas createdهَلُوعًاanxious
Indeed, mankind was created anxious
إِذَاWhenمَسَّهُtouches himالشَّرُّthe evilجَزُوعًاdistressed
When evil touches him, impatient
وَإِذَاAnd whenمَسَّهُtouches himالْخَيْرُthe goodمَنُوعًاwithholding
And when good touches him, withholding [of it]
إِلَّاExceptالْمُصَلِّينَthose who pray
Except the observers of prayer
الَّذِينَThose whoهُمْ[they]عَلَىٰatصَلَاتِهِمْtheir prayerدَآئِمُونَ(are) constant
Those who are constant in their prayer
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoفِىٓinأَمْوَالِهِمْtheir wealthحَقٌّ(is) a rightمَّعْلُومٌknown
And those within whose wealth is a known right
لِّلسَّائِلِFor the one who asksوَالْمَحْرُومِand the deprived
For the petitioner and the deprived
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoيُصَدِّقُونَaccept (the) truthبِيَوْمِ(of the) Dayالدِّينِ(of) the Judgment
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهُم[they]مِّنْofعَذَابِ(the) punishmentرَبِّهِم(of) their Lordمُّشْفِقُونَ(are) fearful
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord
إِنَّIndeedعَذَابَ(the) punishmentرَبِّهِمْ(of) your Lordغَيْرُ(is) notمَأْمُونٍto be felt secure (of)
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهُمْ[they]لِفُرُوجِهِمْtheir modestyحَافِظُونَ(are) guardians
And those who guard their private parts
إِلَّاExceptعَلَىٰٓfromأَزْوَاجِهِمْtheir spousesأَوْorمَاwhatمَلَكَتْthey possessأَيْمَانُهُمْrightfullyفَإِنَّهُمْthen indeed theyغَيْرُ(are) notمَلُومِينَblameworthy
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed
فَمَنِBut whoeverابْتَغَىٰseeksوَرَآءَbeyondذَٰلِكَthatفَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَthen thoseهُمُ[they]الْعَادُونَ(are) the transgressors
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهُمْ[they]لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْof their trustsوَعَهْدِهِمْand their promiseرَاعُونَ(are) observers
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهُم[they]بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْin their testimoniesقَآئِمُونَstand firm
And those who are in their testimonies upright
وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoهُمْ[they]عَلَىٰonصَلَاتِهِمْtheir prayerيُحَافِظُونَkeep a guard
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَThoseفِى(will be) inجَنَّاتٍGardensمُّكْرَمُونَhonored
They will be in gardens, honored
فَمَالِSo what is with?الَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveقِبَلَكَbefore youمُهْطِعِينَ(they) hasten
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad]
عَنِOnالْيَمِينِthe rightوَعَنِand onالشِّمَالِthe leftعِزِينَ(in) separate groups
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups
أَيَطْمَعُDoes long?كُلُّeveryامْرِئٍpersonمِّنْهُمْamong themأَنthatيُدْخَلَhe entersجَنَّةَa Gardenنَعِيمٍ(of) Delight
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure
كَلَّآBy no means!إِنَّاIndeed Weخَلَقْنَاهُم[We] have created themمِّمَّاfrom whatيَعْلَمُونَthey know
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know
فَلَآBut nay!أُقْسِمُI swearبِرَبِّby (the) Lordالْمَشَارِقِ(of) the risingsوَالْمَغَارِبِand the settingsإِنَّاthat Weلَقَادِرُونَ(are) surely Able
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
عَلَىٰٓ[On]أَنtoنُّبَدِّلَ[We] replaceخَيْرًا(with) betterمِّنْهُمْthan themوَمَاand notنَحْنُWeبِمَسْبُوقِينَ(are) to be outrun
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone
فَذَرْهُمْSo leave themيَخُوضُوا(to) converse vainlyوَيَلْعَبُواand amuse themselvesحَتَّىٰuntilيُلَاقُواthey meetيَوْمَهُمُtheir Dayالَّذِىwhichيُوعَدُونَthey are promised
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised
يَوْمَ(The) Dayيَخْرُجُونَthey will come outمِنَfromالْأَجْدَاثِthe gravesسِرَاعًاrapidlyكَأَنَّهُمْas if they (were)إِلَىٰtoنُصُبٍa goalيُوفِضُونَhastening
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening
خَاشِعَةًHumbledأَبْصَارُهُمْtheir eyesightsتَرْهَقُهُمْwill cover themذِلَّةٌhumiliationذَٰلِكَThatالْيَوْمُ(is) the Dayالَّذِىwhichكَانُواthey wereيُوعَدُونَpromised
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised
