Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
12:1
الٓرAlif Laam RaتِلْكَTheseاٰيَاتُ(are the) Versesالْكِتَابِ(of) the Bookالْمُبِينِ[the] clear

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book

12:2
إِنَّآIndeed WeأَنزَلْنَاهُWe have sent it downقُرْآنًا(as) a Quranعَرَبِيًّاin Arabicلَّعَلَّكُمْso that you mayتَعْقِلُونَunderstand

Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand

12:3
نَحْنُWeنَقُصُّwe relateعَلَيْكَto youأَحْسَنَthe bestالْقَصَصِof the narrationsبِمَآin whatأَوْحَيْنَآWe have revealedإِلَيْكَto youهَٰذَا(of) thisالْقُرْاٰنَthe Quranوَإِنalthoughكُنتَyou wereمِنfromقَبْلِهِۦbefore itلَمِنَsurely amongالْغَافِلِينَthe unaware

We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur'an although you were, before it, among the unaware

12:4
إِذْWhenقَالَsaidيُوسُفُYusufلِأَبِيهِto his fatherيَاأَبتِO my father!إِنِّىIndeed IرَأَيْتُI sawأَحَدَone (eleven)عَشَرَten (eleven)كَوْكَبًاstarsوَالشَّمْسَand the sunوَالْقَمَرَand the moonرَأَيْتُهُمْI saw themلِىto meسَاجِدِينَprostrating

[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me

12:5
قَالَHe saidيَابُنَيَّO my son!لَا(Do) notتَقْصُصْrelateرُؤْيَاكَyour visionعَلَىٰٓtoإِخْوَتِكَyour brothersفَيَكِيدُواْlest they planلَكَagainst youكَيْدًاa plotإِنَّIndeedالشَّيْطَانَthe Shaitaanلِلإِنسَانِ(is) to manعَدُوٌّan enemyمُّبِينٌopen

He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy

12:6
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thusيَجْتَبِيكَwill choose youرَبُّكَyour Lordوَيُعَلِّمُكَand will teach youمِنofتَأْوِيلِ(the) interpretationالْأَحَادِيثِ(of) the narrativesوَيُتِمُّand completeنِعْمَتَهُۥHis Favorعَلَيْكَon youوَعَلَىٰٓand onاٰلِ(the) familyيَعْقُوبَ(of) YaqubكَمَآasأَتَمَّهَاHe completed itعَلَىٰٓonأَبَوَيْكَyour two forefathersمِنfromقَبْلُbeforeإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimوَإِسْحَٰقَand IsaacإِنَّIndeedرَبَّكَyour Lordعَلِيمٌ(is) All-KnowerحَكِيمٌAll-Wise

And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise

12:7
لَّقَدْCertainlyكَانَwereفِىinيُوسُفَYusufوَإِخْوَتِهِand his brothersاٰيَاتٌsignsلِّلسَّائِلِينَfor those who ask

Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask

12:8
إِذْWhenقَالُواْthey saidلَيُوسُفُSurely Yusufوَأَخُوهُand his brotherأَحَبُّ(are) more belovedإِلَىٰٓtoأَبِينَاour fatherمِنَّاthan weوَنَحْنُwhile weعُصْبَةٌ(are) a groupإِنَّIndeedأَبَانَاour fatherلَفِى(is) surely inضَلَالٍan errorمُّبِينٍclear

When they said, "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error

12:9
اقْتُلُواْKillيُوسُفَYusufأَوِorاطْرَحُوهُcast himأَرْضًا(to) a landيَخْلُso will be freeلَكُمْfor youوَجْهُ(the) faceأَبِيكُمْ(of) your fatherوَتَكُونُواْand you will beمِنfromبَعْدِهِۦafter thatقَوْمًاa peopleصَالِحِينَrighteous

Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people

12:10
قَالَSaidقَآئِلٌa speakerمِّنْهُمْamong themلَا(Do) notتَقْتُلُوٓاْyou killيُوسُفَYusufوَأَلْقُوهُbut throw himفِىinغَيَابَةِthe bottomالْجُبِّ(of) the wellيَلْتَقِطْهُwill pick himبَعْضُsomeالسَّيَّارَةِ[the] caravanإِنifكُنتُمْyou areفَاعِلِينَdoing

Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]

12:11
قَالُواْThey saidيَاأَبَانَآO our father!مَاWhyلَكَ(do) youلَاnotتَأْمَنَّاyou trust usعَلَىٰwithيُوسُفَYusufوَإِنَّاwhile indeed weلَهُۥ(are) for himلَنَاصِحُونَsurely well-wishers

They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors

12:12
أَرْسِلْهُSend himمَعَنَاwith usغَدًاtomorrowيَرْتَعْ(to) enjoyوَيَلْعَبْand playوَإِنَّاAnd indeed weلَهُۥfor himلَحَافِظُونَ(will) surely (be) guardians

Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians

12:13
قَالَHe saidإِنِّىIndeed [I]لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓit surely saddens meأَنthatتَذْهَبُواْyou should takeبِهِۦhimوَأَخَافُand I fearأَنthatيَأْكُلَهُwould eat himالذِّئْبُa wolfوَأَنتُمْwhile youعَنْهُof himغَافِلُونَ(are) unaware

[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware

12:14
قَالُواْThey saidلَئِنْIfأَكَلَهُeats himالذِّئْبُthe wolfوَنَحْنُwhile weعُصْبَةٌ(are) a groupإِنَّآindeed weإِذًاthenلَّخَاسِرُونَsurely (would be) losers

They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers

12:15
فَلَمَّاSo whenذَهَبُواْthey tookبِهِۦhimوَأَجْمَعُوٓاْand agreedأَنthatيَجْعَلُوهُthey put himفِىinغَيَابَةِ(the) bottomالْجُبِّ(of) the wellوَأَوْحَيْنَآBut We inspiredإِلَيْهِto himلَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُمSurely you will inform themبِأَمْرِهِمْabout their affairهَٰذَاthisوَهُمْwhile theyلَا(do) notيَشْعُرُونَperceive

So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]

12:16
وَجَاؤُواْAnd they cameأَبَاهُمْ(to) their fatherعِشَآءًearly at nightيَبْكُونَweeping

And they came to their father at night, weeping

12:17
قَالُواْThey saidيَاأَبَانَآO our father!إِنَّاIndeed weذَهَبْنَا[we] wentنَسْتَبِقُwe were racing each otherوَتَرَكْنَاand we leftيُوسُفَYusufعِندَwithمَتَاعِنَاour possessionsفَأَكَلَهُand ate himالذِّئْبُthe wolfوَمَآBut notأَنتَyouبِمُؤْمِنٍ(will) believeلَّنَاusوَلَوْeven ifكُنَّاwe areصَادِقِينَtruthful

They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful

12:18
وَجَآؤُواAnd they broughtعَلَىٰuponقَمِيصِهِۦhis shirtبِدَمٍwith bloodكَذِبٍFALSEقَالَHe saidبَلْNayسَوَّلَتْhas enticedلَكُمْfor youأَنفُسُكُمْyour soulsأَمْرًا(to) a matterفَصَبْرٌso patienceجَمِيلٌ(is) beautifulوَٱللّٰهُAnd Allahالْمُسْتَعَانُ(is) the One sought for helpعَلَىٰagainstمَاwhatتَصِفُونَyou describe

And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe

12:19
وَجَآءَتْAnd there cameسَيَّارَةٌa caravanفَأَرْسَلُواْand they sentوَارِدَهُمْtheir water drawerفَأَدْلَىٰthen he let downدَلْوَهُhis bucketقَالَHe saidيَابُشْرَىٰO good news!هَٰذَاThisغُلَامٌ(is) a boyوَأَسَرُّوهُAnd they hid himبِضَاعَةً(as) a merchandiseوَٱللّٰهُAnd Allahعَلِيمٌ(is) All-Knowerبِمَاof whatيَعْمَلُونَthey do

And there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise; and Allah was knowing of what they did

12:20
وَشَرَوْهُAnd they sold himبِثَمَنٍfor a priceبَخْسٍvery lowدَرَاهِمَdirhamsمَعْدُودَةٍfewوَكَانُواْand they wereفِيهِabout himمِنَofالزَّاهِدِينَthose keen to give up

And they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little

12:21
وَقَالَAnd saidالَّذِىthe one whoاشْتَرَاهُbought himمِنofمِّصْرَEgyptلِامْرَأَتِهِۦٓto his wifeأَكْرِمِىMake comfortableمَثْوَاهُhis stayعَسَىٰٓPerhapsأَنthatيَنفَعَنَآ(he) will benefit usأَوْorنَتَّخِذَهُwe will take himوَلَدًا(as) a sonوَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thusمَكَّنَّاWe establishedلِيُوسُفَto Yusufفِىinالْأَرْضِthe landوَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥthat We might teach himمِنfromتَأْوِيلِ(the) interpretation ofالْأَحَادِيثِthe eventsوَٱللّٰهُAnd Allahغَالِبٌ(is) PredominantعَلَىٰٓoverأَمْرِهِۦHis affairsوَلَٰكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَmostالنَّاسِ(of) the peopleلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَknow

And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know

12:22
وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَلَغَhe reachedأَشُدَّهُۥٓhis maturityاٰتَيْنَاهُWe gave himحُكْمًاwisdomوَعِلْمًاand knowledgeوَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thusنَجْزِىWe rewardالْمُحْسِنِينَthe good-doers

And when Joseph reached maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good

12:23
وَرَاوَدَتْهُAnd sought to seduce himالَّتِىshe whoهُوَhe (was)فِىinبَيْتِهَاher houseعَنfromنَّفْسِهِۦhis selfوَغَلَّقَتِAnd she closedالْأَبْوَابَthe doorsوَقَالَتْand she saidهَيْتَCome onلَكَyouقَالَHe saidمَعَاذَI seek refuge inاللهِAllahإِنَّهُۥIndeed heرَبِّىٓ(is) my lordأَحْسَنَ(who has) made goodمَثْوَاىَmy stayإِنَّهُۥIndeedلَاnotيُفْلِحُwill succeedالظَّالِمُونَthe wrongdoers

And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed

12:24
وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyهَمَّتْshe did desireبِهِۦhimوَهَمَّand he would have desiredبِهَاherلَوْلَآif notأَنthatرَّأَىhe sawبُرْهَانَthe proofرَبِّهِۦ(of) his LordكَذَٰلِكَThusلِنَصْرِفَthat We might avertعَنْهُfrom himالسُّوٓءَthe evilوَالْفَحْشَآءِand the immoralityإِنَّهُۥIndeed heمِنْ(was) ofعِبَادِنَاOur slavesالْمُخْلَصِينَthe sincere

And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants

12:25
وَاسْتَبَقَاAnd they both racedالْبَابَ(to) the doorوَقَدَّتْand she toreقَمِيصُهُۥhis shirtمِنfromدُبُرٍthe backوَأَلْفَيَاand they both foundسَيِّدَهَاher husbandلَدَاatالْبَابِthe doorقَالَتْShe saidمَاWhatجَزَآءُ(is) the recompenseمَنْ(of one) whoأَرَادَintendedبِأَهْلِكَfor your wifeسُوٓءًاevilإِلَّآexceptأَنthatيُسْجَنَhe be imprisonedأَوْorعَذَابٌa punishmentأَلِيمٌpainful

And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment

12:26
قَالَHe saidهِىَSheرَاوَدَتْنِىsought to seduce meعَنaboutنَّفْسِىmyselfوَشَهِدَAnd testifiedشَاهِدٌa witnessمِّنْofأَهْلِهَآher familyإِنIfكَانَ[is]قَمِيصُهُۥhis shirtقُدَّ(is) tornمِنfromقُبُلٍthe frontفَصَدَقَتْthen she has spoken the truthوَهُوَand heمِنَ(is) ofالْكَٰذِبِينَthe liars

[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified. "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars

12:27
وَإِنBut ifكَانَ[is]قَمِيصُهُۥhis shirtقُدَّ(is) tornمِنfromدُبُرٍ(the) backفَكَذَبَتْthen she has liedوَهُوَand heمِنَ(is) ofالصَّادِقِينَthe truthful

But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful

12:28
فَلَمَّاSo whenرَأَىhe sawقَمِيصُهُۥhis shirtقُدَّtornمِنfromدُبُرٍ(the) backقَالَhe saidإِنَّهُۥIndeed itمِن(is) ofكَيْدِكُنَّyour plotإِنَّIndeedكَيْدَكُنَّyour plotعَظِيمٌ(is) great

So when her husband saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great

12:29
يُوسُفُYusufأَعْرِضْturn awayعَنْfromهَٰذَاthisوَاسْتَغْفِرِىAnd you ask forgivenessلِذَنبِكِfor your sinإِنَّكِIndeed youكُنتِareمِنَofالْخَاطِئِينَthe sinful

Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful

12:30
وَقَالَAnd saidنِسْوَةٌwomenفِىinالْمَدِينَةِthe cityامْرَأَتُThe wife ofالْعَزِيزِAzizتُرَاوِدُ(is) seeking to seduceفَتَاهَاher slave boyعَنaboutنَّفْسِهِۦhimselfقَدْindeedشَغَفَهَاhe has impassioned herحُبًّا(with) loveإِنَّاIndeed weلَنَرَاهَا[we] surely see herفِىinضَلَالٍan errorمُّبِينٍclear

And women in the city said, "The wife of al-'Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error

12:31
فَلَمَّاSo whenسَمِعَتْshe heardبِمَكْرِهِنَّof their schemingأَرْسَلَتْshe sentإِلَيْهِنَّfor themوَأَعْتَدَتْand she preparedلَهُنَّfor themمُتَّكَأًa banquetوَآتَتْand she gaveكُلَّeachوَاحِدَةٍoneمِّنْهُنَّof themسِكِّينًاa knifeوَقَالَتِand she saidاخْرُجْCome outعَلَيْهِنَّbefore themفَلَمَّاThen whenرَأَيْنَهُۥٓthey saw himأَكْبَرْنَهُthey greatly admired himوَقَطَّعْنَand cutأَيْدِيَهُنَّtheir handsوَقُلْنَthey saidحَاشَForbidلِلّٰهِAllahمَاnotهَٰذَا(is) thisبَشَرًاa manإِنْnotهَٰذَآ(is) thisإِلَّاbutمَلَكٌan angelكَرِيمٌnoble

So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allah! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel

12:32
قَالَتْShe saidفَذَٰلِكُنَّThatالَّذِى(is) the oneلُمْتُنَّنِىyou blamed meفِيهِabout himوَلَقَدْAnd certainlyرَاوَدتُّهُۥI sought to seduce himعَن[from]نَّفْسِهِۦ[himself]فَاسَتَعْصَمَbut he saved himselfوَلَئِنand ifلَّمْnotيَفْعَلْhe doesمَآwhatاٰمُرُهُI order himلَيُسْجَنَنَّsurely he will be imprisonedوَلَيَكُونًاand certainly will beمِّنَofالصَّاغِرِينَthose who are disgraced

She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased

12:33
قَالَHe saidرَبِّMy Lordالسِّجْنُthe prisonأَحَبُّ(is) dearerإِلَىَّto meمِمَّاthan whatيَدْعُونَنِىٓthey invite meإِلَيْهِto itوَإِلَّاAnd unlessتَصْرِفْYou turn awayعَنِّىfrom meكَيْدَهُنَّtheir plotأَصْبُI might inclineإِلَيْهِنَّtowards themوَأَكُنand [I] beمِّنَofالْجَاهِلِينَthe ignorant

He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant

12:34
فَاسْتَجَابَSo respondedلَهُۥto himرَبُّهُۥhis Lordفَصَرَفَand turned awayعَنْهُfrom himكَيْدَهُنَّtheir plotإِنَّهُۥIndeed [He]هُوَHeالسَّمِيعُ(is) All-HearerالْعَلِيمُAll-Knower

So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing

12:35
ثُمَّThenبَدَا(it) appearedلَهُمto themمِّنْfromبَعْدِafterمَا[what]رَأَوُاْthey had seenالاٰيَاتِthe signsلَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥsurely they should imprison himحَتَّىٰuntilحِينٍa time

Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that al-'Azeez should surely imprison him for a time

12:36
وَدَخَلَAnd enteredمَعَهُwith himالسِّجْنَ(in) the prisonفَتَيَانِtwo young menقَالَSaidأَحَدُهُمَآone of bothإِنِّىٓIndeed Iأَرَانِىٓ[I] see myselfأَعْصِرُ! pressingخَمْرًاwineوَقَالَAnd saidالاٰخَرُthe otherإِنِّىٓIndeed Iأَرَانِىٓ[I] see myselfأَحْمِلُ[I am] carryingفَوْقَoverرَأْسِىmy headخُبْزًاbreadتَأْكُلُ(were) eatingالطَّيْرُthe birdsمِنْهُfrom itنَبِّئْنَاInform usبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓof its interpretationإِنَّاindeed weنَرَاكَ[we] see youمِنَofالْمُحْسِنِينَthe good-doers

And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good

12:37
قَالَHe saidلَاNotيَأْتِيكُمَا(will) come to both of youطَعَامٌfoodتُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓyou two are provided withإِلَّاbutنَبَّأْتُكُمَاI will inform both of youبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦof its interpretationقَبْلَbeforeأَن[that]يَأْتِيكُمَا[it] comes to both of youذَٰلِكُمَاboth these interpretations (is knowledge)مِمَّا(is) of whatعَلَّمَنِىhas taught meرَبِّىٓmy LordإِنِّىIndeed Iتَرَكْتُ[I] abandonمِلَّةَ(the) religionقَوْمٍ(of) a peopleلَّاnotيُؤْمِنُونَthey believeبِٱللّٰهِin Allahوَهُمand theyبِالْاَٰخِرَةِin the Hereafterهُمْ[they]كَافِرُونَ(are) disbelievers

He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers

12:38
وَاتَّبَعْتُAnd I followمِلَّةَ(the) religionاٰبَآئِـىٓ(of) my forefathersإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimوَإِسْحَٰقَand Isaacوَيَعْقُوبَand YaqubمَاNotكَانَwasلَنَآfor usأَنthatنُّشْرِكَwe associateبِٱللّٰهِwith AllahمِنanyشَىْءٍthingذَٰلِكَThatمِن(is) fromفَضْلِ(the) Graceاللهِ(of) Allahعَلَيْنَاupon usوَعَلَىand uponالنَّاسِthe mankindوَلَٰكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَmostالنَّاسِ(of) the menلَا(are) notيَشْكُرُونَgrateful

And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful

12:39
يَاصَاحِبَىِO my two companionsالسِّجْنِ(of) the prison!ءَأَرْبَابٌۭAre lords?مُّتَفَرِّقُونَseparateخَيْرٌbetterأَمِorاللهُAllahالْوَاحِدُthe Oneالْقَهَّارُthe Irresistible

O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing

12:40
مَاNotتَعْبُدُونَyou worshipمِنfromدُونِهِۦٓbesides Himإِلَّآbutأَسْمَآءًnamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَآwhich you have named themأَنتُمْyouوَآبَآؤُكُمand your forefathersمَّآnotأَنزَلَ(has) sent downاللهُAllahبِهَاfor itمِنanyسُلْطَانٍauthorityإِنِNotالْحُكْمُ(is) the commandإِلَّاbutلِلّٰهِfor AllahأَمَرَHe has commandedأَلَّاthat notتَعْبُدُوٓاْyou worshipإِلَّآbutإِيَّاهُHim AloneذَٰلِكَThatالدِّينُ(is) the religionالْقَيِّمُthe rightوَلَٰكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَmostالنَّاسِ[the] menلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَknow

You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know

12:41
يَاصَاحِبَىِO my two companionsالسِّجْنِ(of) the prison!أَمَّآAs forأَحَدُكُمَاone of you twoفَيَسْقِىhe will give drinkرَبَّهُۥ(to) his masterخَمْرًاwineوَأَمَّاand as forالاٰخَرُthe otherفَيُصْلَبُhe will be crucifiedفَتَأْكُلُand will eatالطَّيْرُthe birdsمِنfromرَّأْسِهِۦhis headقُضِىَHas been decreedالْأَمْرُthe matterالَّذِىwhichفِيهِabout itتَسْتَفْتِيَانِyou both inquire

O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire

12:42
وَقَالَAnd he saidلِلَّذِىto the one whomظَنَّhe thoughtأَنَّهُۥthat heنَاجٍ(would be) savedمِّنْهُمَاof both of themاذْكُرْنِىMention meعِندَtoرَبِّكَyour masterفَأَنسَاهُBut made him forgetالشَّيْطَانُthe Shaitaanذِكْرَ(the) mentionرَبِّهِۦ(to) his masterفَلَبِثَso he remainedفِىinالسِّجْنِthe prisonبِضْعَseveralسِنِينَyears

And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and Joseph remained in prison several years

12:43
وَقَالَAnd saidالْمَلِكُthe kingإِنِّىٓIndeed Iأَرَىٰ[I] have seenسَبْعَsevenبَقَرَاتٍcowsسِمَانٍfatيَأْكُلُهُنَّeating themسَبْعٌsevenعِجَافٌlean onesوَسَبْعَand sevenسُنبُلَاتٍears (of corn)خُضْرٍgreenوَأُخَرَand othersيَابِسَاتٍdryيَاأَيُّهَاOالْمَلَأُchiefs!أَفْتُونِىExplain to meفِىaboutرُؤْيَاىَmy visionإِنifكُنتُمْyou canلِلرُّؤْيَاof visionsتَعْبُرُونَinterpret

And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions

12:44
قَالُوٓاْThey saidأَضْغَاثُConfusedأَحْلَامٍdreamsوَمَاand notنَحْنُweبِتَأْوِيلِ(are) in the interpretationالْأَحْلَامِ(of) the dreamsبِعَالِمِينَlearned

They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams

12:45
وَقَالَBut saidالَّذِىthe one whoنَجَاwas savedمِنْهُمَاof the twoوَادَّكَرَand rememberedبَعْدَafterأُمَّةٍa periodأَنَاIأُنَبِّئُكُم[I] will inform youبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦof its interpretationفَأَرْسِلُونِso send me forth

But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth

12:46
يُوسُفُYusufأَيُّهَاOالصِّدِّيقُthe truthful one!أَفْتِنَاExplain to usفِىaboutسَبْعِ(the) sevenبَقَرَاتٍcowsسِمَانٍfatيَأْكُلُهُنَّeating themسَبْعٌsevenعِجَافٌlean onesوَسَبْعِand sevenسُنبُلَاتٍears (of corn)خُضْرٍgreenوَأُخَرَand otherيَابِسَاتٍdryلَّعَلِّىٓthat I mayأَرْجِعُreturnإِلَىtoالنَّاسِthe peopleلَعَلَّهُمْso that they mayيَعْلَمُونَknow

[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people; perhaps they will know [about you]

12:47
قَالَHe saidتَزْرَعُونَYou will sowسَبْعَ(for) sevenسِنِينَyearsدَأَبًاas usualفَمَاand that whichحَصَدتُّمْyou reapفَذَرُوهُso leave itفِىinسُنبُلِهِۦٓits earsإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلًاa littleمِّمَّاfrom whichتَأْكُلُونَyou (will) eat

[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat

12:48
ثُمَّThenيَأْتِىwill comeمِنfromبَعْدِafterذَٰلِكَthatسَبْعٌsevenشِدَادٌhard (years)يَأْكُلْنَ(which will) consumeمَاwhatقَدَّمْتُمْyou advancedلَهُنَّfor themإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلًاa littleمِّمَّاof whatتُحْصِنُونَyou (will) store

Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you saved for them, except a little from which you will store

12:49
ثُمَّThenيَأْتِىwill comeمِنfromبَعْدِafterذَٰلِكَthatعَامٌa yearفِيهِin itيُغَاثُwill be given abundant rainالنَّاسُthe peopleوَفِيهِand in itيَعْصِرُونَthey will press

Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]

12:50
وَقَالَAnd saidالْمَلِكُthe kingائْتُونِىBring to meبِهِۦhimفَلَمَّاBut whenجَآءَهُcame to himالرَّسُولُthe messengerقَالَhe saidارْجِعْReturnإِلَىٰtoرَبِّكَyour lordفَاسْـَٔلْهُand ask himمَاwhatبَالُ(is the) caseالنِّسْوَةِ(of) the womenاللَّاتِىwhoقَطَّعْنَcutأَيْدِيَهُنَّtheir handsإِنَّIndeedرَبِّىmy Lordبِكَيْدِهِنَّof their plotعَلِيمٌ(is) All-Knower

And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan

12:51
قَالَHe saidمَاWhatخَطْبُكُنَّ(was) your affairإِذْwhenرَاوَدتُّنَّyou sought to seduceيُوسُفَYusufعَنfromنَّفْسِهِۦhimselfقُلْنَThey saidحَاشَforbid!لِلّٰهِAllahمَاNotعَلِمْنَاwe knowعَلَيْهِabout himمِنanyسُوٓءٍevilقَالَتِSaidامْرَأَتُ(the) wifeالْعَزِيزِ(of) AzizالْـَٰٔنَNowحَصْحَصَ(is) manifestالْحَقُّthe truthأَنَاIرَاوَدتُّهُۥI sought to seduce himعَنfromنَّفْسِهِۦhimselfوَإِنَّهُۥand indeed heلَمِنَ(is) surely ofالصَّادِقِينَthe truthful

Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allah! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-'Azeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful

12:52
ذَٰلِكَThatلِيَعْلَمَhe may knowأَنِّىthat Iلَمْnotأَخُنْهُ[I] betray himبِالْغَيْبِin secretوَأَنَّand thatاللهَAllahلَا(does) notيَهْدِىguideكَيْدَ(the) planالْخَائِنِينَ(of) the betrayers

That is so al-'Azeez will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allah does not guide the plan of betrayers

12:53
وَمَآAnd notأُبَرِّئُI absolveنَفْسِىٓmyselfإِنَّIndeedالنَّفْسَthe soulلَأَمَّارَةٌ(is) a certain enjoinerبِالسُّوٓءِof evilإِلَّاunlessمَا[that]رَحِمَbestows Mercyرَبِّىٓmy LordإِنَّIndeedرَبِّىmy Lordغَفُورٌ(is) Oft-ForgivingرَّحِيمٌMost Merciful

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful

12:54
وَقَالَAnd saidالْمَلِكُthe kingائْتُونِىBring to meبِهِۦٓhimأَسْتَخْلِصْهُI will select himلِنَفْسِىfor myselfفَلَمَّاThen whenكَلَّمَهُۥhe spoke to himقَالَhe saidإِنَّكَIndeed youالْيَوْمَ(are) todayلَدَيْنَاwith usمِكِينٌfirmly establishedأَمِينٌ(and) trusted

And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted

12:55
قَالَHe saidاجْعَلْنِىAppoint meعَلَىٰoverخَزَآئِنِ(the) treasuriesالْأَرْضِ(of) the landإِنِّىIndeed Iحَفِيظٌ(will be) a guardianعَلِيمٌknowing

[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian

12:56
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thusمَكَّنَّاWe establishedلِيُوسُفَ[to] Yusufفِىinالْأَرْضِthe landيَتَبَوَّأُto settleمِنْهَاthereinحَيْثُwhere everيَشَآءُhe willedنُصِيبُWe bestowبِرَحْمَتِنَاOur Mercyمَن(on) whomنَّشَآءُWe willوَلَاAnd notنُضِيعُWe let go wasteأَجْرَ(the) rewardالْمُحْسِنِينَ(of) the good-doers

And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good

12:57
وَلَأَجْرُAnd surely (the) rewardالاٰخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterخَيْرٌ(is) betterلِّلَّذِينَfor those whoاٰمَنُواْbelieveوَكَانُواْand areيَتَّقُونَGod conscious

And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allah

12:58
وَجَآءَAnd cameإِخْوَةُ(the) brothersيُوسُفَ(of) Yusufفَدَخَلُواْand they enteredعَلَيْهِupon himفَعَرَفَهُمْand he recognized themوَهُمْbut theyلَهُۥfor himمُنكِرُونَknew not

And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown

12:59
وَلَمَّاAnd whenجَهَّزَهُمhe had furnished themبِجَهَازِهِمْwith their suppliesقَالَhe saidائْتُونِىBring to meبِأَخٍa brotherلَّكُمof yoursمِّنْfromأَبِيكُمْyour fatherأَلَاDo not?تَرَوْنَyou seeأَنِّىٓthat Iأُوفِى[I] give fullالْكَيْلَ[the] measureوَأَنَاْand that I amخَيْرُ(the) bestالْمُنزِلِينَ(of) the hosts

And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do not you see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators

12:60
فَإِنBut ifلَّمْnotتَأْتُونِيyou bring to meبِهِۦhimفَلَاthen (there will be) noكَيْلَmeasureلَكُمْfor youعِندِىfrom meوَلَاand notتَقْرَبُونِyou will come near me

But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me

12:61
قَالُواْThey saidسَنُرَاوِدُWe will try to get permissionعَنْهُfor himأَبَاهُ(from) his fatherوَإِنَّاand indeed weلَفَاعِلُونَsurely will do

They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]

12:62
وَقَالَAnd he saidلِفِتْيَانِهِto his servantsاجْعَلُواْPutبِضَاعَتَهُمْtheir merchandiseفِىinرِحَالِهِمْtheir saddlebagsلَعَلَّهُمْso that theyيَعْرِفُونَهَآmay recognize itإِذَاwhenانقَلَبُواْthey go backإِلَىٰٓtoأَهْلِهِمْtheir peopleلَعَلَّهُمْso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَreturn

And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return

12:63
فَلَمَّاSo whenرَجَعُوٓاْthey returnedإِلَىٰٓtoأَبِيهِمْtheir fatherقَالُواْthey saidيَاأَبَانَآO our father!مُنِعَHas been deniedمِنَّاto usالْكَيْلُthe measureفَأَرْسِلْso sendمَعَنَآwith usأَخَانَاour brotherنَكْتَلْ(that) we will get measureوَإِنَّاAnd indeed weلَهُۥfor himلَحَافِظُونَ(will) surely (be) guardians

So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians

12:64
قَالَHe saidهَلْShould?اٰمَنُكُمْI entrust youعَلَيْهِwith himإِلَّاexceptكَمَآasأَمِنتُكُمْI entrusted youعَلَىٰٓwithأَخِيهِhis brotherمِنfromقَبْلُbeforeفَٱللّٰهُBut Allahخَيْرٌ(is) the bestحَافِظًاGuardianوَهُوَand Heأَرْحَمُ(is the) Most Mercifulالرَّاحِمِينَ(of) the merciful

He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful

12:65
وَلَمَّاAnd whenفَتَحُواْthey openedمَتَاعَهُمْtheir baggageوَجَدُواْthey foundبِضَاعَتَهُمْtheir merchandiseرُدَّتْreturnedإِلَيْهِمْto themقَالُواْThey saidيَاأَبَانَآO our father!مَاWhatنَبْغِى(could) we desireهَٰذِهِۦThisبِضَاعَتُنَا(is) our merchandiseرُدَّتْreturnedإِلَيْنَاto usوَنَمِيرُAnd we will get provisionأَهْلَنَا(for) our familyوَنَحْفَظُand we will protectأَخَانَاour brotherوَنَزْدَادُand we will get an increaseكَيْلَmeasureبَعِيرٍ(of) a camel's (load)ذَٰلِكَThatكَيْلٌ(is) a measurementيَسِيرٌeasy

And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement

12:66
قَالَHe saidلَنْNeverأُرْسِلَهُۥwill I send himمَعَكُمْwith youحَتَّىٰuntilتُؤْتُونِyou give to meمَوْثِقًاa promiseمِّنَbyاللهِAllahلَتَأْتُنَّنِىthat surely you will bring to meبِهِۦٓhimإِلَّآunlessأَنthatيُحَاطَsurroundedبِكُمْyou areفَلَمَّآAnd whenاٰتَوْهُthey had given himمَوْثِقَهُمْtheir promiseقَالَhe saidاللهُAllahعَلَىٰoverمَاwhatنَقُولُwe sayوَكِيلٌ(is) a Guardian

[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded by enemies." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Witness

12:67
وَقَالَAnd he saidيَابَنِىَّO my sons!لَا(Do) notتَدْخُلُواْenterمِنfromبَابٍgateوَاحِدٍoneوَادْخُلُواْbut enterمِنْfromأَبْوَابٍgatesمُّتَفَرِّقَةٍdifferentوَمَآAnd notأُغْنِيI can availعَنكُمyouمِّنَagainstاللهِAllahمِنanyشَىْءٍthingإِنِNotالْحُكْمُ(is) the decisionإِلَّاexceptلِلّٰهِwith Allahعَلَيْهِupon HimتَوَكَّلْتُI put my trustوَعَلَيْهِand upon Himفَلْيَتَوَكَّلِlet put (their) trustالْمُتَوَكِّلُونَthe ones who put trust

And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely

12:68
وَلَمَّاAnd whenدَخَلُواْthey enteredمِنْfromحَيْثُwhereأَمَرَهُمْordered themأَبُوهُمtheir fatherمَّاnotكَانَitيُغْنِىavail(ed)عَنْهُمthemمِّنَagainstاللهِAllahمِنanyشَىْءٍthingإِلَّاbutحَاجَةً(it was) a needفِىofنَفْسِsoulيَعْقُوبَof Yaqubقَضَاهَاwhich he carried outوَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed heلَذُو(was) a possessorعِلْمٍ(of) knowledgeلِّمَاbecauseعَلَّمْنَاهُWe had taught himوَلَٰكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَmostالنَّاسِ(of) the peopleلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَknow

And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allah at all except [it was] a need within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know

12:69
وَلَمَّاAnd whenدَخَلُواْthey enteredعَلَىٰuponيُوسُفَYusufاٰوَىٰٓhe tookإِلَيْهِto himselfأَخَاهُhis brotherقَالَHe saidإِنِّىٓIndeed Iأَنَا[I] amأَخُوكَyour brotherفَلَاso (do) notتَبْتَئِسْyou grieveبِمَاfor whatكَانُواْthey used (to)يَعْمَلُونَdo

And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]

12:70
فَلَمَّاSo whenجَهَّزَهُمhe had furnished themبِجَهَازِهِمْwith their suppliesجَعَلَhe putالسِّقَايَةَthe drinking cupفِىinرَحْلِthe bagأَخِيهِ(of) his brotherثُمَّThenأَذَّنَcalled outمُؤَذِّنٌan announcerأَيَّتُهَاO youالْعِيرُ(in) the caravan!إِنَّكُمْIndeed youلَسَارِقُونَsurely (are) thieves

So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves

12:71
قَالُواْThey saidوَأَقْبَلُواْturning towardsعَلَيْهِمthemمَّاذَاWhat (is it)?تَفْقِدُونَyou miss

They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing

12:72
قَالُواْThey saidنَفْقِدُWe are missingصُوَاعَ(the) cupالْمَلِكِ(of) the kingوَلِمَنAnd for (one) whoجَآءَbringsبِهِۦitحِمْلُ(is) a loadبَعِيرٍ(of) a camelوَأَنَاْand Iبِهِۦfor itزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible

They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it

12:73
قَالُواْThey saidتَاللّٰهِBy Allahلَقَدْcertainlyعَلِمْتُمyou knowمَّاnotجِئْنَاwe cameلِنُفْسِدَthat we cause corruptionفِىinالْأَرْضِthe landوَمَاand notكُنَّاwe areسَارِقِينَthieves

They said, "By Allah, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves

12:74
قَالُواْThey saidفَمَاThen whatجَزَآؤُهُۥٓ(will be the) recompense (of) itإِنifكُنتُمْyou areكَاذِبِينَliars

The accusers said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars

12:75
قَالُواْThey saidجَزَآؤُهُۥIts recompenseمَن(is that one) whoوُجِدَit is foundفِىinرَحْلِهِhis bagفَهُوَthen heجَزَاؤُهُۥ(will be) his recompenseكَذَٰلِكَThusنَجْزِى(do) we recompenseالظَّالِمِينَthe wrongdoers

[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers

12:76
فَبَدَأَSo he beganبِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْwith their bagsقَبْلَbeforeوِعَآءِ(the) bagأَخِيهِ(of) his brotherثُمَّthenاسْتَخْرَجَهَاhe brought it outمِنfromوِعَآءِ(the) bagأَخِيهِ(of) his brotherكَذَٰلِكَThusكِدْنَا(did) We planلِيُوسُفَfor YusufمَاnotكَانَHe couldلِيَأْخُذَtakeأَخَاهُhis brotherفِىbyدِينِthe lawالْمَلِكِ(of) the kingإِلَّآexceptأَنthatيَشَآءَwilledاللهُAllahنَرْفَعُWe raiseدَرَجَاتٍ(in) degreesمَّنwhomنَّشَآءُWe willوَفَوْقَbut overكُلِّeveryذِىpossessorعِلْمٍ(of) knowledgeعَلِيمٌ(is) the All-Knower

So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing

12:77
قَالُوٓاْThey saidإِنIfيَسْرِقْhe stealsفَقَدْthen verilyسَرَقَstoleأَخٌa brotherلَّهُۥof hisمِنfromقَبْلُbeforeفَأَسَرَّهَاBut kept it secretيُوسُفُYusufفِىwithinنَفْسِهِۦhimselfوَلَمْand (did) notيُبْدِهَاreveal itلَهُمْto themقَالَHe saidأَنتُمْYouشَرٌّ(are the) worseمَّكَانًا(in) positionوَٱللّٰهُand Allahأَعْلَمْknows bestبِمَاof whatتَصِفُونَyou describe

They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe

12:78
قَالُواْThey saidيَاأَيُّهَاOالْعَزِيزُAziz!إِنَّIndeedلَهُۥٓhe hasأَبًاa fatherشَيْخًاoldكَبِيرًا[great]فَخُذْso takeأَحَدَنَاone of usمَكَانَهُۥٓ(in) his placeإِنَّاIndeed weنَرَاكَ[we] see youمِنَofالْمُحْسِنِينَthe good-doers

They said, "O 'Azeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good

12:79
قَالَHe saidمَعَاذَforbidاللهِAllahأَنthatنَّأْخُذَwe takeإِلَّاexceptمَن(one) whoوَجَدْنَاwe foundمَتَاعَنَاour possessionعِندَهُۥٓwith himإِنَّآIndeed weإِذًاthenلَّظَالِمُونَsurely (would be) wrongdoers

He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust

12:80
فَلَمَّاSo whenاسْتَيْأَسُواْthey despairedمِنْهُof himخَلَصُواْthey secluded themselvesنَجِيًّا(in) private consultationقَالَSaidكَبِيرُهُمْthe eldest among themأَلَمْDo not?تَعْلَمُوٓاْyou knowأَنَّthatأَبَاكُمْyour fatherقَدْhasأَخَذَtakenعَلَيْكُمupon youمَّوْثِقًاa promiseمِّنَbyاللهِAllahوَمِنand fromقَبْلُbeforeمَاthatفَرَّطتُمْyou failedفِىconcerningيُوسُفَYusufفَلَنْSo neverأَبْرَحَwill I leaveالْأَرْضَthe landحَتَّىٰuntilيَأْذَنَpermitsلِىٓmeأَبِىٓmy fatherأَوْorيَحْكُمَdecidesاللهُAllahلِىfor meوَهُوَand Heخَيْرُ(is) the Bestالْحَاكِمِينَ(of) the judges

So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allah and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of judges

12:81
ارْجِعُواْReturnإِلَىٰٓtoأَبِيكُمْyour fatherفَقُولُواْand sayيَاأَبَانَآO our father!إِنَّIndeedابْنَكَyour sonسَرَقَhas stolenوَمَاand notشَهِدْنَاwe testifyإِلَّاexceptبِمَاof whatعَلِمْنَاwe knewوَمَاAnd notكُنَّاwe wereلِلْغَيْبِof the unseenحَافِظِينَguardians

Return to your father and say, "O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen

12:82
وَاسْأَلِAnd askالْقَرْيَةَthe townالَّتِىwhereكُنَّاwe wereفِيهَا[in it]وَالْعِيْرَand the caravanالَّتِىٓwhichأَقْبَلْنَاwe returnedفِيهَا[in it]وَإِنَّاAnd indeed weلَصَادِقُونَsurely (are) truthful'

And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful

12:83
قَالَHe saidبَلْNayسَوَّلَتْhave enticedلَكُمْyouأَنفُسُكُمْyour soulsأَمْرًاsomethingفَصَبْرٌso patienceجَمِيلٌ(is) beautifulعَسَىPerhapsاللهُAllahأَنthatيَأْتِيَنِىwill bring to meبِهِمْthemجَمِيعًاallإِنَّهُۥIndeed HeهُوَHeالْعَلِيمُ(is) the All-KnowerالْحَكِيمُAll-Wise

[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them to me all together. Indeed it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise

12:84
وَتَوَلَّىٰAnd he turned awayعَنْهُمْfrom themوَقَالَand saidيَاأَسَفَىٰAlas my griefعَلَىٰoverيُوسُفَYusuf!وَابْيَضَّتْAnd became whiteعَيْنَاهُhis eyesمِنَfromالْحُزْنِthe griefفَهُوَand he (was)كَظِيمٌa suppressor

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor

12:85
قَالُواْThey saidتَاللّٰهِBy Allahتَفْتَؤُاْyou will not ceaseتَذْكُرُrememberingيُوسُفَYusufحَتَّىٰuntilتَكُونَyou becomeحَرَضًاfatally illأَوْorتَكُونَyou becomeمِنَofالْهَالِكِينَthose who perish

They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish

12:86
قَالَHe saidإِنَّمَآOnlyأَشْكُوI complainبَثِّى(of) my sufferingوَحُزْنِىٓand my griefإِلَىtoاللهِAllahوَأَعْلَمُand I knowمِنَfromاللهِAllahمَاwhatلَاnotتَعْلَمُونَyou know

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know

12:87
يَابَنِىَّO my sons!اذْهَبُواْGoفَتَحَسَّسُواْand inquireمِنaboutيُوسُفَYusufوَأَخِيهِand his brotherوَلَاand notتَيْأَسُواْdespairمِنofرَّوْحِ(the) Mercyاللهِof AllahإِنَّهُۥIndeedلَاnoneيَيْأَسُdespairsمِنofرَّوْحِ(the) Mercyاللهِof Allahإِلَّاexceptالْقَوْمُthe peopleالْكَافِرُونَthe disbelievers

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people

12:88
فَلَمَّاSo whenدَخَلُواْthey enteredعَلَيْهِupon himقَالُواْthey saidيَاأَيُّهَاO youالْعَزِيزُAziz!مَسَّنَاHas touched usوَأَهْلَنَاand our familyالضُّرُّthe adversityوَجِئْنَاand we have comeبِبِضَاعَةٍwith goodsمُّزْجَاةٍ(of) little valueفَأَوْفِbut pay (in) fullلَنَاto usالْكَيْلَthe measureوَتَصَدَّقْand be charitableعَلَيْنَآto usإِنَّIndeedاللهَAllahيَجْزِىrewardsالْمُتَصَدِّقِينَthe charitable

So when they entered upon Joseph, they said, "O 'Azeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable

12:89
قَالَHe saidهَلْDo?عَلِمْتُمyou knowمَّاwhatفَعَلْتُمyou didبِيُوسُفَwith Yusufوَأَخِيهِand his brotherإِذْwhenأَنتُمْyou wereجَاهِلُونَignorant

He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant

12:90
قَالُوٓاْThey saidأَءِنَّكَAre you indeed?لَأَنتَsurely youيُوسُفُYusufقَالَHe saidأَنَاI amيُوسُفُYusufوَهَٰذَآand thisأَخِى(is) my brotherقَدْIndeedمَنَّhas been graciousاللهُAllahعَلَيْنَآto usإِنَّهُۥIndeed heمَنwhoيَتَّقِfears Allahوَيَصْبِرْand (is) patientفَإِنَّthen indeedاللهَAllahلَا(does) notيُضِيعُlet go wasteأَجْرَ(the) rewardالْمُحْسِنِينَ(of) the good-doers

They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good

12:91
قَالُواْThey saidتَاللّٰهِBy Allahلَقَدْcertainlyاٰثَرَكَhas preferred youاللهُAllahعَلَيْنَاover usوَإِنand indeedكُنَّاwe have beenلَخَاطِئِينَsinners

They said, "By Allah, certainly has Allah preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners

12:92
قَالَHe saidلَاNoتَثْرَيبَblameعَلَيْكُمُupon youالْيَوْمَtodayيَغْفِرُwill forgiveاللهُAllahلَكُمْyouوَهُوَand Heأَرْحَمُ(is) the Most Mercifulالرَّاحِمِينَ(of) those who show mercy

He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful

12:93
اذْهَبُواْGoبِقَمِيصِىwith shirt of mineهَٰذَاthisفَأَلْقُوهُand cast itعَلَىٰoverوَجْهِ(the) faceأَبِى(of) my fatherيَأْتِhe will regainبَصِيرًاsightوَأْتُونِىAnd bring to meبِأَهْلِكُمْyour familyأَجْمَعِينَall together

Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together

12:94
وَلَمَّاAnd whenفَصَلَتِdepartedالْعِيرُthe caravanقَالَsaidأَبُوهُمْtheir fatherإِنِّىIndeed Iلَأَجِدُ[I] findرِيحَ(the) smellيُوسُفَ(of) Yusufلَوْلَآif notأَنthatتُفَنِّدُونِyou think me weakened in mind

And when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said, "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind

12:95
قَالُواْThey saidتَاللّٰهِBy Allahإِنَّكَindeed youلَفِىsurely (are) inضَلَالِكَyour errorالْقَدِيمِold

They said, "By Allah, indeed you are in your [same] old error

12:96
فَلَمَّآThen whenأَن[that]جَآءَarrivedالْبَشِيرُthe bearer of glad tidingsأَلْقَاهُhe cast itعَلَىٰoverوَجْهِهِۦhis faceفَارْتَدَّthen returned (his)بَصِيرًاsightقَالَHe saidأَلَمْDid not?أَقُلI sayلَّكُمْto youإِنِّىٓindeed Iأَعْلَمُ[I] knowمِنَfromاللهِAllahمَاwhatلَاnotتَعْلَمُونَyou know

And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allah that which you do not know

12:97
قَالُواْThey saidيَاأَبَانَآO our father!اسْتَغْفِرْAsk forgivenessلَنَاfor usذُنُوبَنَآ(of) our sinsإِنَّاIndeed weكُنَّاhave beenخَاطِئِينَsinners

They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners

12:98
قَالَHe saidسَوْفَSoonأَسْتَغْفِرُI will ask forgivenessلَكُمْfor youرَبِّىٓ(from) my LordإِنَّهُۥIndeed HeهُوَHeالْغَفُورُ(is) the Oft-Forgivingالرَّحِيمُthe Most Merciful

He said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful

12:99
فَلَمَّاThen whenدَخَلُواْthey enteredعَلَىٰuponيُوسُفَYusufاٰوَىٰٓhe tookإِلَيْهِto himselfأَبَوَيْهِhis parentsوَقَالَand saidادْخُلُواْEnterمِصْرَEgyptإِنifشَآءَwillsاللهُAllahاٰمِنِينَsafe

And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself and said, "Enter Egypt, Allah willing, safe [and secure]

12:100
وَرَفَعَAnd he raisedأَبَوَيْهِhis parentsعَلَىuponالْعَرْشِthe throneوَخَرُّواْand they fell downلَهُۥto himسُجَّدًاprostrateوَقَالَAnd he saidيَاأَبَتِO my father!هَٰذَاThisتَأْوِيلُ(is the) interpretationرُؤْيَاىَ(of) my dreamمِنfromقَبْلُ(of) beforeقَدْVerilyجَعَلَهَاhas made itرَبِّىmy LordحَقًّاTRUEوَقَدْAnd indeedأَحْسَنَHe was goodبَيto meإِذْwhenأَخْرَجَنِيHe took me outمِنَofالسِّجْنِthe prisonوَجَآءَand broughtبِكُمyouمِّنَfromالْبَدْوِthe bedouin lifeمِنfromبَعْدِafterأَن[that]نَّزغَhad caused discordالشَّيْطَانُthe Shaitaanبَيْنِىbetween meوَبَيْنَand betweenإِخْوَتِىٓmy brothersإِنَّIndeedرَبِّىmy Lordلَطِيفٌ(is) Most Subtleلِّمَاto whatيَشَآءُHe willsإِنَّهُۥIndeed HeهُوَHeالْعَلِيمُ(is) the All-Knowerالْحَكِيمُthe All-Wise

And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise

12:101
رَبِّMy Lordقَدْindeedاٰتَيْتَنِىyou have given meمِنَofالْمُلْكِthe sovereigntyوَعَلَّمْتَنِىand taught meمِنofتَأْوِيلِthe interpretationالْأَحَادِيثِof the eventsفَاطِرَCreatorالسَّمَاوَاتِ(of) the heavensوَالْأَرْضِand the earthأَنتَYouوَلِيِّى(are) my Protectorفِىinالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَالْآخِرَةِand the HereafterتَوَفَّنِىYou cause me to dieمُسْلِمًا(as) a Muslimوَأَلْحِقْنِىand join meبِالصَّالِحِينَwith the righteous

My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous

12:102
ذَٰلِكَThatمِنْ(is) fromأَنبَآءِthe newsالْغَيْبِ(of) the unseenنُوحِيهِwhich We revealإِلَيْكَto youوَمَاAnd notكُنتَyou wereلَدَيْهِمْwith themإِذْwhenأَجْمَعُوٓاْthey put togetherأَمْرَهُمْtheir planوَهُمْwhile theyيَمْكُرُونَ(were) plotting

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired

12:103
وَمَآAnd notأَكْثَرُmostالنَّاسِ(of) the mankindوَلَوْeven thoughحَرَصْتَyou desireبِمُؤْمِنِينَ(will be) believers

And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers

12:104
وَمَاAnd notتَسْأَلُهُمْyou ask themعَلَيْهِfor itمِنْanyأَجْرٍrewardإِنْNotهُوَ(is) itإِلَّاbutذِكْرٌa reminderلِّلْعَالَمِينَto the worlds

And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds

12:105
وَكَأَيِّنAnd how manyمِّنْofاٰيَةٍa Signفِىinالسَّمَاوَاتِthe heavensوَالْأَرْضِand the earthيَمُرُّونَthey passعَلَيْهَاover itوَهُمْwhile theyعَنْهَا(are) from themمُعْرِضُونَthe ones who turn away

And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away

12:106
وَمَاAnd notيُؤْمِنُbelieveأَكْثَرُهُمْmost of themبِٱللّٰهِin Allahإِلَّاexceptوَهُمwhile theyمُّشْرِكُونَassociate partners with Him

And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him

12:107
أَفَأَمِنُواْDo they then feel secure?أَن(against) thatتَأْتِيَهُمْcomes to themغَاشِيَةٌan overwhelmingمِّنْ[of]عَذَابِpunishmentاللهِ(of) Allahأَوْorتَأْتِيَهُمُcomes to themالسَّاعَةُthe Hourبَغْتَةًsuddenlyوَهُمْwhile theyلَا(do) notيَشْعُرُونَperceive

Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allah or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive

12:108
قُلْSayهَٰذِهِۦThisسَبِيلِىٓ(is) my wayأَدْعُوٓاI inviteإِلَىtoاللهِAllahعَلَىٰwithبَصِيرَةٍinsightأَنَاIوَمَنِand whoeverاتَّبَعَنِىfollows meوَسُبْحَانَAnd Glory beاللهِ(to) Allahوَمَآand notأَنَاI amمِنَofالْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheists

Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him

12:109
وَمَآAnd notأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنfromقَبْلِكَbefore youإِلَّاbutرِجَالًاmenنُّوحِىٓWe revealedإِلَيْهِمto themمِّنْfrom (among)أَهْلِ(the) peopleالْقُرَىٰٓ(of) the townshipsأَفَلَمْSo have not?يَسِيرُواْthey traveledفِىinالْأَرْضِthe earthفَيَنظُرُواْand seenكَيْفَhow?كَانَwasعَاقِبَةُ(the) endالَّذِينَ(of) those whoمِن(were) fromقَبْلِهِمْbefore themوَلَدَارُAnd surely the homeالاٰخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterخَيْرٌ(is) bestلِّلَّذِينَfor those whoاتَّقَواْfear AllahأَفَلَاThen will not?تَعْقِلُونَyou use reason

And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah; then will you not reason

12:110
حَتَّىٰٓUntilإِذَاwhenاسْتَيْأَسَgave up hopeالرُّسُلُthe Messengersوَظَنُّوٓاْand thoughtأَنَّهُمْthat theyقَدْcertainlyكُذِبُواْwere deniedجَآءَهُمْthen came to themنَصْرُنَاOur helpفَنُجِّىَand was savedمَنwhomنَّشَآءُWe willedوَلَاAnd notيُرَدُّ(can) be repelledبَأْسُنَاOur punishmentعَنِfromالْقَوْمِthe peopleالْمُجْرِمِينَ(who are) criminals

[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals

12:111
لَقَدْVerilyكَانَ(there) isفِىinقَصَصِهِمْtheir storiesعِبْرَةٌa lessonلِّأُوْلِىfor menالْأَلْبَابِ(of) understandingمَاNotكَانَ(it) isحَدِيثًاa narrationيُفْتَرَىٰinventedوَلَٰكِنbutتَصْدِيقَa confirmationالَّذِى(of that) whichبَيْنَbetween (is before it)يَدَيْهِhis hands (is before it)وَتَفْصِيلَand a detailed explanationكُلِّ(of) allشَىْءٍthingsوَهُدًىand a guidanceوَرَحْمَةًand mercyلِّقَوْمٍfor a peopleيُؤْمِنُونَwho believe

There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe
