Surah 68

القلمAl-Qalam

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) nameاللهِ(of) Allahالرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
68:1
نٓNunوَالْقَلَمِBy the penوَمَاand whatيَسْطُرُونَthey write

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe

68:2
مَآNotأَنتَyou (are)بِنِعْمَةِby (the) Graceرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordبِمَجْنُونٍa madman

You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman

68:3
وَإِنَّAnd indeedلَكَfor youلَأَجْرًاsurely (is) a rewardغَيْرَwithoutمَمْنُونٍend

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted

68:4
وَإِنَّكَAnd indeed youلَعَلىٰsurely (are)خُلُقٍ(of) a moral characterعَظِيمٍgreat

And indeed, you are of a great moral character

68:5
فَسَتُبْصِرُSo you will seeوَيُبْصِرُونَand they will see

So you will see and they will see

68:6
بِأَييِّكُمُWhich of you?الْمَفْتُونُ(is) the afflicted one

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]

68:7
إِنَّIndeedرَبَّكَyour LordهُوَHeأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِمَنof (he) whoضَلَّhas strayedعَنfromسَبِيلِهِۦHis wayوَهُوَand Heأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِالْمُهْتَدِينَof the guided ones

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided

68:8
فَلَاSo (do) notتُطِعِobeyالْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniers

Then do not obey the deniers

68:9
وَدُّواThey wishلَوْthatتُدْهِنُyou should compromiseفَيُدْهِنُونَso they would compromise

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]

68:10
وَلَاAnd (do) notتُطِعْobeyكُلَّeveryحَلَّافٍhabitual swearerمَّهِينٍworthless

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

68:11
هَمَّازٍDefamerمَّشَّآءٍgoing aboutبِنَمِيمٍwith malicious gossip

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip

68:12
مَّنَّاعٍA preventerلِّلْخَيْرِof (the) goodمُعْتَدٍtransgressorأَثِيمٍsinful

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful

68:13
عُتُلٍّCruelبَعْدَafterذَٰلِكَ(all) thatزَنِيمٍutterly useless

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender

68:14
أَنBecauseكَانَ(he) isذَاa possessorمَالٍ(of) wealthوَبَنِينَand children

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children

68:15
إِذَاWhenتُتْلَىٰare recitedعَلَيْهِto himاٰيَاتُنَاOur Versesقَالَhe saysأَسَاطِيرُStoriesالْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples

68:16
سَنَسِمُهُۥWe will brand himعَلَىonالْخُرْطُومِthe snout

We will brand him upon the snout

68:17
إِنَّاIndeed Weبَلَوْنَاهُمْhave tried themكَمَاasبَلَوْنَاWe triedأَصْحَابَ(the) companionsالْجَنَّةِ(of) the gardenإِذْwhenأَقْسَمُواthey sworeلَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاto pluck its fruitمُصْبِحِينَ(in the) morning

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

68:18
وَلَاAnd notيَسْتَثْنُونَmaking exception

Without making exception

68:19
فَطَافَSo there cameعَلَيْهَاupon itطَآئِفٌa visitationمِّنfromرَّبِّكَyour Lordوَهُمْwhile theyنَآئِمُونَwere asleep

So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep

68:20
فَأَصْبَحَتْSo it becameكَالصَّرِيمِas if reaped

And it became as though reaped

68:21
فَتَنَادَواAnd they called one anotherمُصْبِحِينَ(at) morning

And they called one another at morning

68:22
أَنِThatاغْدُواْGo earlyعَلَىٰtoحَرْثِكُمْyour cropإِنifكُنتُمْyou wouldصَارِمِينَpluck (the) fruit

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit

68:23
فَانطَلَقُواSo they wentوَهُمْwhile theyيَتَخَافَتُونَlowered (their) voices

So they set out, while lowering their voices

68:24
أَنThatلَّاNotيَدْخُلَنَّهَاwill enter itالْيَوْمَtodayعَلَيْكُمupon youمِّسْكِينٌany poor person

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person

68:25
وَغَدَوْاAnd they went earlyعَلَىٰwithحَرْدٍdeterminationقَادِرِينَable

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able

68:26
فَلَمَّاBut whenرَأَوْهَاthey saw itقَالُوٓاْthey saidإِنَّاIndeed weلَضَآلُّونَ(are) surely lost

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost

68:27
بَلْNay!نَحْنُWeمَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprived

Rather, we have been deprived

68:28
قَالَSaidأَوْسَطُهُمْ(the) most moderate of themأَلَمْDid not?أَقُلI tellلَّكُمْyouلَوْلَاWhy notتُسَبِّحُونَyou glorify (Allah)

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]

68:29
قَالُواْThey saidسُبْحَٰنَGlory beرَبِّنَآ(to) our Lord!إِنَّاIndeed weكُنَّا[we] wereظَالِمِينَwrongdoers

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers

68:30
فَأَقْبَلَThen approachedبَعْضُهُمْsome of themعَلَىٰtoبَعْضٍothersيَتَلَاوَمُونَblaming each other

Then they approached one another, blaming each other

68:31
قَالُواْThey saidيَاوَيْلَنَآO woe to us!إِنَّاIndeed weكُنَّا[we] wereطَاغِينَtransgressors

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors

68:32
عَسَىٰPerhapsرَبُّنَآour Lordأَن[that]يُبْدِلَنَاwill substitute for usخَيْرًاa betterمِّنْهَاthan itإِنَّآIndeed weإِلَىٰtoرَبِّنَاour Lordرَاغِبُونَturn devoutly

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous

68:33
كَذَٰلِكَSuchالْعَذَابُ(is) the punishmentوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely the punishmentالْاٰخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterأَكْبَرُ(is) greaterلَوْifكَانُواtheyيَعْلَمُونَknow

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew

68:34
إِنَّIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteousعِندَwithرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordجَنَّاتِ(are) Gardensالنَّعِيمِ(of) Delight

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure

68:35
أَفَنَجْعَلُThen will We treat?الْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsكَالْمُجْرِمِينَlike the criminals

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals

68:36
مَاWhat?لَكُمْ(is) for youكَيْفَHow?تَحْكُمُونَ(do) you judge

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge

68:37
أَمْOrلَكُمْ(is) for youكِتَابٌa bookفِيهِwhereinتَدْرُسُونَyou learn

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

68:38
إِنَّIndeedلَكُمْfor youفِيهِin itلَمَاwhatتَخَيَّرُونَyou choose

That indeed for you is whatever you choose

68:39
أَمْOrلَكُمْfor youأَيْمَانٌoathsعَلَيْنَاfrom usبَالِغَةٌreachingإِلَىٰtoيَوْمِ(the) Dayالْقِيَامَةِ(of) the Resurrectionإِنَّindeedلَكُمْfor youلَمَا(is) whatتَحْكُمُونَyou judge

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge

68:40
سَلْهُمAsk themأَيُّهُمwhich of them?بِذَلِكَfor thatزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible

68:41
أَمْOrلَهُمْ(are) for themشُرَكَآءُpartnersفَلْيَأْتُواThen let them bringبِشُرَكَائِهِمْtheir partnersإِنifكَانُواthey areصَادِقِينَtruthful

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful

68:42
يَوْمَ(The) Dayيُكْشَفُwill be uncoveredعَنfromسَاقٍthe shinوَيُدْعَوْنَand they will be calledإِلَىtoالسُّجُودِprostrateفَلَاbut notيَسْتَطِيعُونَthey will be able

The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able

68:43
خَاشِعَةًHumbledأَبْصَارُهُمْtheir eyesتَرْهَقُهُمْwill cover themذِلَّةٌhumiliationوَقَدْAnd indeedكَانُواthey wereيُدْعَوْنَcalledإِلَىtoالسُّجُودِprostrateوَهُمْwhile theyسَالِمُونَ(were) sound

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound

68:44
فَذَرْنِىSo leave Meوَمَنand whoeverيُكَذِّبُdeniesبِهَٰذَاthisالْحَدِيثِStatementسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمWe will progressively lead themمِّنْfromحَيْثُwhereلَاnotيَعْلَمُونَthey know

So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know

68:45
وَأُمْلِيAnd I will give respiteلَهُمْto themإِنَّIndeedكَيْدِىMy planمَتِينٌ(is) firm

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm

68:46
أَمْOrتَسْأَلُهُمْyou ask themأَجْرًاa paymentفَهُمso theyمِّنfromمَّغْرَمٍ(the) debtمُّثْقَلُونَ(are) burdened

Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down

68:47
أَمْOrعِندَهُمُ(is) with themالْغَيْبُthe unseenفَهُمْso theyيَكْتُبُونَwrite it

Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down

68:48
فَاصْبِرْSo be patientلِحُكْمِfor (the) decisionرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordوَلَاand (do) notتَكُنbeكَصَاحِبِlike (the) companionالْحُوتِ(of) the fishإِذْwhenنَادَىٰhe called outوَهُوَwhile heمَكْظُومٌ(was) distressed

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed

68:49
لَّوْلَآIf notأَنthatتَدَارَكَهُovertook himنِعْمَةٌa Favorمِّنfromرَّبِّهِۦhis Lordلَنُبِذَsurely he would have been thrownبِالْعَرَآءِonto (the) naked shoreوَهُوَwhile heمَذْمُومٌ(was) blamed

If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured

68:50
فَاجْتَبَاهُBut chose himرَبُّهُۥhis Lordفَجَعَلَهُۥand made himمِنَofالصَّالِحِينَthe righteous

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous

68:51
وَإِنAnd indeedيَكَادُwould almostالَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُواdisbelieveلَيُزْلِقُونَكَsurely make you slipبِأَبْصَارِهِمْwith their lookلَمَّاwhenسَمِعُواthey hearالذِّكْرَthe Messageوَيَقُولُونَand they sayإِنَّهُۥIndeed heلَمَجْنُونٌ(is) surely mad

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad

68:52
وَمَاAnd notهُوَit (is)إِلَّاbutذِكْرٌa Reminderلِّلْعَالَمِينَto the worlds

But it is not except a reminder to the worlds
